Back pains are widely seen in children between the ages of 12 and 18. This is considered to be caused by heavy backpacks. Ideally the weight of the backpack and its contents are recommended to be not above 20% of the child’s weight. Heavier backpacks cause posture disorders and back pains. Structural spine disorders are not related to backpack use.
Backpacks used by children shall also have lumbar supports. It would be better for children to use hand held or wheeled bags instead of backpacks.
Another point that should be focused is that backpacks cannot be the only cause of back pain. Therefore a child whose back pains do not regress despite making lighter back pains shall be examined by a paediatric orthopaedist. Detailed inspections can reveal the true cause of the pains. Thus any possible underlying spinal disorder or a disease can be diagnosed.
The most important role of the parents of children that suffer from back or lower back pains is to follow the procedures necessary to identify and eliminate the main cause of the pain. Both a consultation with a paediatric orthopaedist or arrangements related to the backpack of the child will prevent diseases or problems at an early stage.
