Along with orthopaedic and neurological problems, Cerebral Palsy patients can also have various problems in the field of otorhinolaryngology and dental medicine. The most common problem is swollen adenoids.
Swollen adenoid may cause several clinical conditions in children. Some examples are listed below
- Difficulty in breathing
- Breathing and sleeping with open mouth
- Snoring or apnea in sleep
- Frequent upper respiratory infections
- Middle ear problems and hearing problems
- Sinusitis
- Foul breath
- Absence of appetite
- Developmental problems in jawbone, teeth, palate or facial bones.
Disturbance of sleep quality due to adenoid also impact the daytime comfort of children. Frequent upper respiratory infections also impact the development, education and daily life of the children.
Another problem of children with Cerebral Palsy is that continuous salivation. The reasons include insufficient control of chewing muscles, mouth breathing, difficulty in swallowing and excessive secretion of saliva. Excessively increase in saliva secretion cause reflux during sleep resulting in coughing fits and intermittently waking up during the night.
There are also serious difficulties in ensuring oral hygiene of children with Cerebral Palsy. Therefore, their disposition to periodontal diseases and teeth problems and loss of teeth is frequent in the patients.
Due to frequent reasons listed above, patients brought to orthopaedic examination with cerebral palsy diagnosis must be also forwarded to relevant units for otorhinolaryngology and dentist examinations. Thus, it is possible to complete otorhinolaryngology and dental interventions to cerebral palsy patients in the same session with an orthopaedic intervention. By performing all procedures in the same session, application of anaesthetics multiple times for different interventions is avoided.
